The Essighaus lies in the heart of Heidelberg’s old town
It is one of the oldest restaurants in the city, with a tradition hearkening back to the year 1844. Today, Essighaus offers predominately regional dishes. Traditional home recipes, ample portions, and agreeable prices – that’s our style. We offer seasonal dishes, white asparagus (Spargel) for example, leg of goose (Gänsekeule), or roasted wild boar (Wildschweinbraten). Dining with us you’ll experience hearty home cooking, as well as tasty vegetarian dishes.
We have a daily special throughout the week that is served with a complementary bowl of soup or salad. As you would expect from a traditional restaurant, our dishes are homemade and contain no flavor enhancers. Our „Spätzle“ (Swabian noodles) are scraped by hand, our mashed potatoes are freshly made, and our sauces are prepared from scratch. The Sauerbraten is marinated using our own special recipe and the salads are freshly prepared every day. We believe that the effort we put into the preparation is reflected in the tasty flavor of our meals. We hope this website will give you an impression of the variety of dishes we offer in our restaurant.
For many locals Essighaus has long been a comfortable hangout and a pleasant gathering place. We have a diverse clientele, with local residents from the old town quickly visiting as well as faculty members and students from the university, families with children, theatre goers, city strollers and tourists. We offer friendly service and of course are happy to accommodate any extra wishes
you might have or prepare special menus for you.
Adjacent to our spacious dining area on the ground floor we have an event room for up to 70 people, ideal for private parties, social clubs, parents‘ evenings, or round table discussions. In summer, our spacious beer garden is one of the most popular in Heidelberg.
Yours Karsten Springer & Stefan Eberle
